A Day in the life of a Camp Kalsman camper
This is an illustration of how a great Camp Kalsman camper spends a day, from early morning to late night. We’ll call our example camper "Becky".
7:15 am - Boker Tov (Wake up!)
Every morning Becky wakes up at 7:15 (8:15 on Shabbat) to the sound of music in her cabin. She gets out of bed and gets dressed for the morning.
8:00 am - Aruchat Boker (Breakfast)
Becky and the rest of her bunk walk down to the Chadar Ochel (Dining Hall) with her counselors. The whole camp joins in singing the Motzi. Becky sits with her bunk and eats some delicious scrambled eggs and hash browns.
8:45 am - Shira (song session)
Every day after breakfast, Becky and her bunkmates join in a spirited song session. They sing old favorites, and learn new songs!
9:00 am – Nikayon (Clean up)
After their songs, Becky’s cabin goes back to their bunk to clean. Each morning each camper is assigned a different job. Today, Becky is in charge of sweeping.
9:45 am - 1st Activity Period: Sports/Outdoors
Becky and her cabin love their time playing outside and learning new sports skills. They started this morning with a fun game of ga-ga, tomorrow it might be soccer!
11:00 pm - Shiur (Learning)
In shiur today, Becky got to make and decorate her own prayer book to use during services with her unit.
12:00 pm - Aruchat Tzohorayim (Lunch)
Becky sits with her bunk at lunch. After saying the Motzi, Becky and her cabin line up for delicious tomato soup and grilled cheese.
1:00 pm Menucha (Rest Period)
Menucha is when Becky goes back to relax. Today she is going to write a letter to her parents about how much fun she is having and how she won her first game of ga-ga!
2:00 pm – 2nd Activity Period: Adventure
Becky and her bunk get to climb the tower for the first time today. Becky is pretty nervous about it, but her bunkmates cheer her on and she makes it to the top!
3:15 pm – 3rd Activity Period – Arts & Crafts
Arts time is one of Becky’s favorites! She is really excited about making her vase and firing it in the kiln. She knows she will bring it home and it will remind her of her time at camp.
4:00 pm - Swimming
Becky’s been looking forward to swimming all day. After a long day of activities, Becky and her cabin friends have a great time hanging out by the pool, splashing around, and improving their swimming skills.
5:00 pm - Shower Hour & Dinner Prep
After swimming, Becky heads back to her bunk. Everyone showers and puts on some clean clothes for dinner and the rest of the night.
6:00 pm - Aruchat Erev (Dinner) and Shira (Song Session)
Dinner tonight is Hamburgers and Hot Dogs. Becky enjoys her meal and her dessert, Jello! After everyone is done eating, Becky and her friends join the songleaders and all of camp in energetic dancing and singing!
7:15 pm Chufsha (Free choice)
Every evening after supper, Becky has the opportunity to select from a menu of some of our most popular camp activities. She is excited about getting the chance to try something new, or maybe go back and work on the vase she started earlier.
7:45 pm - Evening Program
Becky’s counselors always have the best evening programs every night. Tonight Becky and her unit are doing camp scavenger hunt.
8:45 pm - T’fillot (Worship)
Every night, Becky enjoys going to some inspiring and spiritual services led by faculty, counselors and fellow campers.
9:30 pm - Lilah Tov (Good Night!)
Becky goes back to her bunk with her bunkmates and counselors. Everyone brushes their teeth and gets ready for bed. Before they go to sleep, they do their nighttime ritual. First, they sing the Sh’ma and then everyone tells about their favorite part of the day.
